CONFERENCE CONCEPT

The conference is dedicated to the 150th birthday of Alexander Lappo-Danylevskii (1863-1919), a prominent Russian social thinker and scientist, renowned by his works on methodology of socio-historical analysis, in particular, for his critique and alternative solution to the methodological dilemma of the opposing idiographic and nomothetic approaches in social sciences.

Since the age of ‘classical sociology’, the problems of methodological and conceptual fundamentals to understanding modern societies have been central to the reflection in social sciences. Approaches that have evolved in XX century are insufficient and inadequate in their capacity to explain and predict shifts of socio-historical processes on global and local scales. Contemporary sociology faces a new methodological challenge in the comprehension of modernity.

The conference provides a platform to exchange ideas, share knowledge and discuss the alternative methodological approaches and research strategies in the analysis of modernity. The conference aims to bring together scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds involving the human and social sciences. We invite sociologists, historians, political scientists and philosophers to participate in the debates on the proposed topics.
